Read the shutter count a Nikon camera recorded, from an original NEF or JPG file. The exact number from the maker note, or a plain answer when the file holds none.
NikonNikon cameras store extensive makernote metadata covering vibration reduction status, active D-Lighting settings, focus area mode, flash compensation, high ISO noise reduction, and a shutter count. This tool reads the count Nikon writes as ShutterCount (tag 0x00A7) from a NEF raw or an untouched JPEG; for the standard EXIF fields of the same file, use the EXIF Checker.
The JPEG and the NEF from the same camera carry the same count. Use the file straight from the card: editing apps and messengers usually drop the maker note, and the count goes with it. Older Nikon compacts do not record a count at all.
