Technical Metrics

Megapixels, aspect ratio, color depth, compression level.

How scoring works

Three metrics are calculated: resolution score (megapixels relative to use case), compression score (bytes-per-pixel indicating data preservation), and sharpness estimate (derived from compression and resolution). These combine into an overall 0-100 quality score with specific recommendations for web, print, and professional use. Read our image quality guide for deeper tips.

Resolution vs quality

High resolution doesn't guarantee high quality — a 20MP image compressed to 200KB will show artifacts. Conversely, a well-preserved 8MP image can outperform a poorly compressed 20MP one. For print-specific assessment, try the Print Readiness Scanner.

Frequently Asked Questions

What quality metrics are analyzed?

We check resolution, estimated sharpness, compression quality, color depth, and file size efficiency.

What resolution is needed for printing?

For high-quality prints, aim for 300 DPI. A 4x6 print needs ~1200x1800 pixels minimum.

Is higher resolution always better?

For web use, very high resolution wastes bandwidth. For print, higher resolution enables larger prints.
