AI upscaling engine

Uses Real-ESRGAN, a deep learning model trained on millions of images. Preserves textures, sharpens edges, and adds realistic detail that simple interpolation can't.

2× and 4× presets

Pick the scale before you run. 2× is faster and safer for photos that are already large; 4× is for small or cropped images that need real detail back.

Private & Secure

Your photo is sent to our AI server, upscaled in seconds, and deleted immediately after processing. It is never shared or used for anything else. The clean full-resolution result is held only briefly so you can download it, then removed.

How it works

How AI image upscaling works

This tool uses Real-ESRGAN (Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network), a deep learning model trained on millions of image pairs to reconstruct high-resolution detail from low-resolution input. Unlike basic interpolation that blurs edges and invents nothing, Real-ESRGAN predicts realistic textures, sharpens edges, and fills in plausible detail — effectively reversing the information loss from downsampling. The model runs on our AI server in 10-30 seconds depending on image size and scale factor. For metadata inspection of your original image, use the EXIF Checker.

What the upscaler does not do

Real-ESRGAN enlarges the whole image uniformly. It runs no face detection, no face model and no generative fill: nothing is invented that was not in the original pixels, and no facial feature is reconstructed, altered or replaced. If you need a portrait cut out from its background, use the Background Remover.

2× vs 4× — which scale to choose

2× doubles width and height (4× total pixels) — best when your source is already decent quality and you need a moderate boost for printing or social media. 4× quadruples dimensions (16× total pixels) — ideal for very small images, old screenshots, or thumbnails that need to become full-size. Higher upscaling takes longer and works best on clean source material. After upscaling, you can crop to exact dimensions with the Image Cropper or check whether the result is print-ready with the Print Readiness Scanner.

Common use cases for image upscaling

Restoring old or low-resolution photos for printing or framing. Enlarging product images for e-commerce listings that require high-res shots. Upscaling screenshots, thumbnails, or social media images to full size. Improving resolution for large-format printing — posters, banners, canvas prints. Enhancing profile pictures or headshots. After upscaling, optimize file size with the Image Compressor, resize for specific platforms with the Social Resizer, or convert formats with the Format Converter. Explore all 92 image tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this image upscaler free?

Yes, completely free with no watermarks, no account required, and no daily limits. Processing runs on our AI server using Real-ESRGAN — your image is deleted immediately after the upscaled result is returned.

What is Real-ESRGAN?

Real-ESRGAN (Enhanced Super-Resolution Generative Adversarial Network) is a deep learning model trained to enlarge images while preserving sharp edges, textures, and fine details. Unlike basic upscaling that just adds blurry pixels, Real-ESRGAN predicts and generates realistic high-resolution detail from low-resolution input.

Should I use 2× or 4× upscaling?

2× doubles width and height (4× total pixels) — use it when your source is already decent and you need a moderate size boost. 4× quadruples both dimensions (16× total pixels) — best for very small images, old photos, or thumbnails. Higher upscaling takes longer and works best on clean source material. Maximum input dimension is 2048 pixels.

Does the upscaler change faces?

No. Real-ESRGAN upscales the whole image uniformly — there is no face detection step and no separate face model. Faces come out larger and sharper for the same reason the rest of the photo does, and no facial feature is reconstructed or altered.

Are my images stored on the server?

No. Your image is sent to our AI server, upscaled, and the result is returned to your browser. The original image is deleted immediately after processing — nothing is stored, logged, or shared.

How long does upscaling take?

Typically 10-30 seconds depending on image size and scale factor. 2× upscaling is faster than 4×. The model runs on a GPU server, so processing time is mostly the AI inference — there is no model download to your device.
