How it works
The picture Photoshop saved
A PSD holds a flattened copy of all visible layers next to the layers themselves. The viewer draws that copy, so you see the file the way it looked when it was saved.
Fit or actual size
The image is drawn once at its full size. Fit shrinks it to your screen, 100% shows every pixel and scrolls. Transparent areas can sit on a checkerboard, white or black.
What is inside the file
Next to the picture you see its size, colour mode, bit depth, PSD or PSB, compression, layer count, transparency and whether it carries a colour profile.
Honest about what it cannot draw
CMYK, Lab and 32-bit files, and files saved without Maximize Compatibility, are not drawn in full. If the file holds Photoshop's small preview, that is shown instead and labelled with its real size.
