What is Digital Photo Forensics?

Digital photo forensics is the science of analyzing image files to determine their origin, authenticity, and modification history. Every digital photo carries technical fingerprints — EXIF metadata, compression artifacts, noise patterns, and file structure — that reveal whether the image came directly from a camera, was processed through editing software, generated by AI, or captured as a screenshot. Forensic analysis examines these signals systematically to answer a fundamental question: can this image be trusted?

Photo forensics has moved from a niche discipline used by law enforcement and intelligence agencies into an everyday necessity. Journalists verify user-submitted images before publication. Insurance companies check claim photos for manipulation. Lawyers authenticate photographic evidence. Marketplaces detect fake product images. Dating platforms flag AI-generated profile pictures. Even casual social media users want to know whether the viral photo they just saw is genuine or fabricated.

Types of Image Manipulation

Understanding the categories of manipulation helps you choose the right forensic tool. Each type leaves different technical traces:

  • Photo editing (retouching, compositing): Real camera photos modified with tools like Photoshop, Lightroom, or Snapseed. Editing leaves software tags in metadata, timestamp mismatches between creation and modification dates, double compression artifacts in re-saved JPEGs, and inconsistent noise patterns where content was cloned or pasted.   • AI generation: Images created entirely from text prompts by Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, or Flux. AI-generated images typically lack camera EXIF metadata, may contain visual artifacts (misshapen hands, garbled text, impossible geometry), and exhibit noise patterns unlike any real camera sensor.   • Screenshots: Screen captures that document what appeared on a display rather than what existed in the real world. Screenshots have characteristic resolution dimensions matching device screens, no camera EXIF data, PNG format, and low bytes-per-pixel compression ratios. The Forensic Verification Workflow

No single test definitively proves or disproves a photo's authenticity. Professional forensic analysis follows a layered approach, checking multiple independent signals and looking for consistency or contradiction across them:

  1. Metadata analysis — Check camera make/model, software tags, timestamps, and GPS data with the EXIF Checker. Missing or inconsistent metadata is the first red flag.
  2. Authenticity scoring — Run the image through the Authenticity Checker for automated analysis of metadata consistency, software traces, and compression patterns.
