How it works
How AI object removal works
This tool uses LaMa (Large Mask Inpainting), a deep learning model that fills masked regions of an image with content that matches the surrounding area. LaMa uses Fourier convolutions to capture repeating patterns and textures — stripes on a shirt, bricks on a wall, grass in a field — and synthesizes a visually coherent fill. You paint over the object you want to remove, and the model figures out what should be there instead. Processing happens on our AI server in 2-5 seconds, and the original photo is deleted immediately. For metadata inspection before sharing, use the EXIF Checker.
Tips for best object removal results
Paint slightly beyond the edges of the object — covering a thin margin of background gives the AI more context for a seamless fill. Use a larger brush for big objects and a smaller brush for fine details like wires or text. If the first result leaves artifacts, go back to the editor, refine your mask, and process again. LaMa works best on images up to 2K resolution. If you need to resize afterward, use the Image Resizer. For removing just the background entirely, the Background Remover is faster.
Object remover vs background remover — when to use each
The Background Remover isolates the main subject and removes everything else — great for product photos, portraits, and transparent PNGs. The Object Remover does the opposite: it keeps the background intact and removes specific elements you paint over — a photobomber, a power line, a rubbish bin, an ex in a group shot. For upscaling the cleaned result, try the Image Upscaler.
