How it works

The picture Photoshop saved

A PSD holds a flattened copy of all visible layers next to the layers themselves. That copy is what becomes your PNG, so it looks the way the file looked when it was saved.

Transparency kept exactly

Photoshop stores soft edges blended onto white. The white is taken back out, and the PNG is written by its own encoder, because a browser canvas rounds away colour in nearly clear pixels.

Every PNG is read back

Before download the PNG is decoded again and compared with the image, every pixel and every alpha value. If one differs, nothing is downloaded.

Unsupported PSDs are named

CMYK, Lab and 32-bit files, and files saved without Maximize Compatibility, would come out with wrong colours or blank. The page names the problem and tells you how to re-save instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert a PSD to PNG?

Upload the PSD or PSB file and press Download PNG. The PNG is read back and checked before it is saved.

Do I need Photoshop?

No. The file is read in your browser. It works on any PSD saved with its full-size composite image, which Photoshop writes unless Maximize Compatibility is turned off.

Is the transparency kept?

Yes. Transparent and semi-transparent pixels stay that way in the PNG, soft edges included. The preview shows them on a checkerboard.

Can I get the layers separately?

No. The PNG is the flattened image Photoshop saved with the file. Drawing each layer would need Photoshop's blend modes and effects, which are not rebuilt here.

Which PSDs does it refuse?

CMYK, Lab, Duotone and Multichannel files, 32-bit HDR files, and files saved with Maximize Compatibility off, which carry no full-size composite. The page names the reason and how to re-save the file.

Are colour profiles applied?

No. The colour values are copied as they are, and the page tells you when the file has a profile. For sRGB files, the usual case, nothing changes.

Is there a size limit?

500 MB for the file and 40 megapixels for the image. A larger image is refused with its real size, never scaled down without telling you.

Is my PSD uploaded anywhere?

No. The PSD is read and converted in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
