Tips for best results

Ensure the barcode is fully visible and in focus. Avoid extreme angles — straight-on photos work best. Good lighting helps: avoid shadows across the barcode. If the first attempt fails, try cropping the image closer to the barcode. Also try our QR Scanner for 2D codes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What barcode formats are supported?

Our scanner supports all major 1D barcode formats: EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, Code 128, Code 39, Codabar, and Interleaved 2 of 5 (ITF). These cover most retail products, shipping labels, and industrial applications.

Can I look up product information from the barcode?

After scanning, we provide a direct link to search the barcode number on Google. This helps you find product details, pricing, and availability. For comprehensive product databases, you may want to use specialized barcode lookup services.

Why isn't my barcode being detected?

Barcode detection requires a clear, well-lit image. Ensure the barcode is not blurry, damaged, or at an extreme angle. The barcode should fill a reasonable portion of the image. Try taking a new photo with better lighting and focus.

Is this tool free to use?

Yes, completely free with no limits. All barcode scanning happens in your browser using the Quagga2 library. There's no registration, no ads, and no hidden costs. Use it as much as you need.

Can I scan barcodes from product photos online?

Yes! You can save any product image containing a barcode and upload it to our scanner. This works great for scanning barcodes from online listings, product catalogs, or screenshots from shopping apps.

What's the difference between QR codes and barcodes?

Traditional barcodes (1D) store data in horizontal lines and typically contain only numbers (like product UPCs). QR codes (2D) use a square pattern of dots and can store much more data including text, URLs, and contact information. We have separate tools for each.
