DALL-E Detection

How it works

DALL-E (by OpenAI) generates images at characteristic resolutions — 1024x1024 for DALL-E 2 and 1024x1024 or 1792x1024 for DALL-E 3. These images lack camera metadata entirely and may embed OpenAI watermarking. Our detector analyzes resolution patterns, metadata absence, compression characteristics, and other signals to estimate the probability that an image was generated by DALL-E.

Tips

DALL-E 3 images distributed through ChatGPT may contain C2PA metadata identifying them as AI-generated. Check our Authenticity Checker which reads C2PA provenance data. Images re-saved or screenshotted lose this watermark, making metadata analysis more important.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if an image is from DALL-E?

DALL-E images have no camera EXIF data, use standard square or widescreen resolutions, and recent versions may contain C2PA provenance metadata from OpenAI. Our detector checks all these signals.

Does DALL-E watermark its images?

DALL-E 3 images from ChatGPT include C2PA metadata that identifies them as AI-generated. However, re-saving, screenshotting, or editing the image removes this metadata. Visual watermarking is not currently used.

Can DALL-E 3 images fool detection?

DALL-E 3 produces very high quality images, but the absence of real camera metadata remains a strong signal. Combined with resolution analysis and compression pattern checking, detection is still effective.

What is the difference between DALL-E 2 and DALL-E 3 detection?

DALL-E 2 outputs 1024x1024 images exclusively. DALL-E 3 supports additional resolutions including 1792x1024 and 1024x1792. DALL-E 3 also produces more realistic images but may include C2PA provenance metadata.
