The issue is almost always resolution. Your image doesn't have enough pixels for the size you're trying to use it at. What Image Resolution Actually Means
Resolution is the number of pixels in an image, expressed as width × height. A photo that's 4000 pixels wide and 3000 pixels tall has a resolution of 4000×3000, which equals 12 million pixels — or 12 megapixels.
More pixels means more detail, but it also means more data and larger files. The question isn't "how many pixels do I have?" — it's "do I have enough pixels for what I'm doing?" A 2 MP image is plenty for a social media thumbnail. That same image would look terrible on a 24×36 poster.

DPI: The Number Everyone Misunderstands
DPI stands for dots per inch. It describes how many pixels get packed into each inch of a printed output. Higher DPI means more detail per inch, which means sharper prints.
Here's what trips people up: the DPI tag embedded in an image file is just metadata. Changing it from 72 to 300 in Photoshop doesn't add any pixels — it just changes how software interprets the existing pixels. What actually matters is how many pixels you have divided by the physical size you want to print at.
A 3000×2000 image printed at 10×6.67 inches gives you 300 DPI — sharp enough for professional print. That same image printed at 30×20 inches gives you 100 DPI — noticeably soft up close. The pixels didn't change. The physical size did.

Resolution Requirements by Platform

Resolution vs. Quality: They're Not the Same Thing
A common mistake is assuming high resolution equals high quality. It doesn't. Resolution is one factor — but compression, noise, and sharpness matter just as much.
A 20 MP image saved at JPEG quality 20 will look terrible — blocky artifacts, color banding, lost detail. Meanwhile, a 5 MP image saved at quality 95 can look stunning. The pixels are there in the first image, but the data between them has been thrown away.

What About Upscaling?
AI upscalers like Topaz Gigapixel, Photoshop's Super Resolution, and various online tools can increase pixel dimensions. They work by generating new pixels based on patterns in the existing image. The results can look convincing — but the added detail is fabricated.
For web use and social media, AI upscaling is usually fine. For professional print, legal evidence, stock photography submissions, or medical imaging — upscaled images may not pass quality review. When resolution matters, capture at high resolution from the start.
Common Questions
What resolution do I need for printing? For sharp prints, you need 300 DPI at your target size. A 4000×3000 image (12 MP) prints sharply up to about 13×10 inches. For larger prints viewed from a distance (posters, banners), 150 DPI is often acceptable.
Is megapixels the same as resolution? Megapixels is the total pixel count (width × height ÷ 1,000,000). Resolution refers to the pixel dimensions themselves. A 12 MP image could be 4000×3000 or 6000×2000 — same megapixels, different aspect ratio and print potential.
Why is my image 72 DPI? 72 DPI is a legacy default from early Mac displays. The DPI tag in a file is just metadata — it doesn't change the actual pixel count. What matters is how many pixels you have relative to the size you want to print or display.
Can I increase an image's resolution? You can upscale with AI tools, but they generate new pixels based on guesswork — the added detail is fabricated. For critical use (professional print, legal evidence), reshoot at higher resolution rather than upscaling.
