Resolution: Pixels at Print Size
Forget megapixels. What matters is how many pixels you have at your target print size. A 12-megapixel image (4000×3000 pixels) prints beautifully at 8×10 inches — that's 400 DPI, well above the 300 DPI threshold. But stretch that same file across a 20×30 poster and you're down to 150 DPI. Still passable for wall art, but not for anything viewed up close.

Compression: The Invisible Destroyer

JPEG is convenient but lossy. Every save degrades the image slightly. If your print workflow involves editing — cropping, color correction, resizing — each save compounds the damage. For critical prints, work in PNG or TIFF and convert to JPEG only as the final export step at maximum quality (95+).

When to Walk Away from a Source File
Not every image is printable. If the source is a screenshot (72 DPI, PNG compressed), a social media download (aggressively compressed, metadata stripped), or a thumbnail pulled from a website — it's not going to produce an acceptable print at any size.
