A photo is a grid of pixels. Each pixel holds three numbers — red, green, blue — ranging from 0 to 255. Every filter you've ever used in Instagram, Lightroom, or VSCO does the same thing: it runs arithmetic on those numbers. Brightness multiplies all three channels by a factor. Contrast stretches the gap between the lightest and darkest values. Saturation adjusts how far each channel sits from gray.

That's it. There's no magic. A "vintage" filter is just reduced saturation plus shifted hue plus lowered contrast — three operations stacked. A "dramatic" filter is boosted contrast plus boosted saturation. The names are marketing. The math is simple.

This matters because once you understand what each slider actually does, you stop guessing. You stop cycling through 47 named presets hoping one looks right. You adjust the specific parameter that fixes the specific problem in your specific image.

Six Sliders, One at a Time

Brightness (0–200%) scales the overall lightness. Below 100% darkens, above 100% lightens. A photo shot in harsh midday sun might benefit from 85–90%. An indoor shot with bad lighting might need 115–120%. Don't go past 130% unless you're going for a deliberate blown-out look — highlights clip fast.

Contrast (0–200%) controls the range between darks and lights. Low contrast produces a flat, hazy image. High contrast creates punchy blacks and bright whites. Most photos improve with a small bump to 105–115%. Push past 140% and you start losing detail in shadows and highlights.

Saturation (0–200%) sets color intensity. Zero is full grayscale. 100% is the original. Anything above 100% makes colors more vivid. Portrait photographers often drop saturation slightly (90–95%) for a more natural skin tone. Landscape photographers push it up (110–120%) to make skies and foliage pop. Going above 140% makes everything look like a postcard from 1985.

Hue (−180° to +180°) rotates every color in the image around the color wheel. Small adjustments — 10 to 20 degrees positive — add warmth, shifting blues toward teal and yellows toward orange. Negative values add cool tones. At ±180° you get a full color inversion, which is occasionally useful for artistic effect and almost never useful for photography.

Blur (0–20px) smooths the image by averaging neighboring pixels. Low values (1–3px) reduce grain in noisy photos. Higher values create an intentional soft-focus effect. It's destructive — the detail is gone once you export — so use it sparingly. Sharpen (0–100%) does the opposite: it amplifies edges. A light pass at 15–30% can rescue a slightly soft image. Presets as Starting Points

Warm and Cool shift color temperature. Warm moves toward golden hour tones. Cool moves toward overcast daylight. These two are the workhorses for correcting white balance when a photo was shot under the wrong lighting.

Vintage combines low contrast, muted saturation, and slight warmth. It mimics faded film stock. The look is trendy in cycles — it was everywhere around 2014, faded, and came back. It works well for casual social media posts where you want texture without intensity.

Dramatic cranks contrast and saturation. High impact. Best for landscape photography, sports, and anything where you want the viewer's attention immediately. Not great for portraits — skin tones go nuclear.

Soft adds slight blur and lifts brightness. It's the portrait filter — diffused light, gentle tones, flattering to skin. Combined with a small saturation drop, it produces the look that portrait photographers charge real money for.

The Before/After Slider Tells You the Truth

Editing photos is like turning up the volume on headphones. You adjust gradually, and after ten minutes you don't realize how far you've drifted from the original. Everything looks normal because you adapted.
