Official passport photo sizes by country
Every country specifies exact passport photo dimensions. The United States requires 2×2 inches (51×51 mm), output here as 600×600 pixels at 300 DPI. The European Union, United Kingdom, and India use 35×45 mm (413×531 px). Canada requires 50×70 mm (591×827 px). All presets output at 300 DPI — the minimum for professional photo printing. For photos going to screens only, 150 DPI suffices. If you need to verify whether your final image meets specific DPI requirements, run it through the DPI Checker. How face detection works
The tool uses a neural-network face detector (TinyFaceDetector) that runs entirely in your browser. It finds the face bounding box and 68 facial landmarks, then calculates the crop region so the head is positioned according to passport photo guidelines — face centered horizontally, head occupying roughly 60–70% of the frame height, with adequate space above the crown. If no face is detected (side profile, sunglasses, extreme angle), the crop falls back to center framing. For best results, use a well-lit, front-facing photo against a plain background. Background removal for passport photos
Most passport agencies require a plain white or light gray background. The optional background removal uses an AI segmentation model that separates the person from the scene, then composites them onto a solid white backdrop. This works best when the original background is relatively uniform. Complex backgrounds (outdoor scenes, patterned walls) may leave artifacts around hair edges. For a cleaner result, start with a photo taken against a plain wall. If you only need background removal without the passport crop, use the standalone Background Remover. Printing your passport photo
The "4×6 Print Sheet" button tiles multiple copies of your passport photo onto a standard 4×6 inch (10×15 cm) print — the most common drugstore print size. Take this file to any photo printing service (CVS, Walgreens, Boots, local print shop) and print it on glossy or matte photo paper. Cut along the edges to get individual passport photos. For US passports, a 4×6 sheet fits 6 copies of the 2×2 inch photo. This costs under $0.50 total versus $10–15 at a passport photo booth.
